Vegan Pizza Rolls Recipe: Simple, Cheesy and So Tasty!

It’s no secret that I love pizza. I have my own recipe up here for vegan pizza and have a number of pizza places in Dublin that I want to add to my growing list of reviews. That said, making your own pizza can be time consuming if you’re doing it from scratch. Sometimes I need something that’s simple and quick but still satisfies that pizza craving. With that in mind, I set to work on making my vegan pizza rolls recipe.

As you may have guessed with some of my recent recipes such as vegan jambons, vegan sausage rolls and vegan puff pastry slices, pre rolled puff pastry is quickly becoming a kitchen staple for me. When you don’t have a lot of time, it can be the perfect route to a quick, delicious dinner.

Vegan pizza rolls are incredibly simple to make. All it takes is some pre-rolled puff pastry, vegan cheese and a tasty sauce. The sauce below is based on the one from my vegan pizza recipe but is quite a bit thicker. A thick sauce is key to these pizza rolls as if it’s too thin you’re going to end up with wet pastry. Also, when you’re rolling the pastry make sure you roll it nice and lightly as otherwise the puff pastry won’t have room to expand.

My recipe is also for quite a lot of vegan pizza rolls (never a problem in my book) as I don’t like only using half a tin of tomatoes. If you would like to use one pastry sheet, there is a handy quantity changer below that can reduce it to 12 pizza rolls.

As always, if you have any questions get in touch and I’d be happy to help.

p.s. One final exciting note – I have been shortlisted for a Blog Award 2018!!. Thanks so much to them for shortlisting me. I made the longlist last year and shortlist this year which makes me so proud of the progress my little blog has made. Thank you to everyone who has used one of my recipes – it’s the nice comments I have got that have made all of this worthwhile.

Instructions
For the pizza sauce:
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over a medium heat.
  3. Add the onion, garlic and celery and cook for 4-5 minutes until soft.
  4. Add the basil and oregano and cook for a further 2 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, nutritional yeast, stock cube and water to the pan. Stir until well combined.
  6. Leave to bubble gently for 10 minutes, adding a small bit more water if required. Make sure the sauce is nice and thick before you remove from the heat.
  7. Add the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth.
For the pizza rolls:
  1. Roll out the puff pastry sheets flat.
  2. Spread a thin layer of the pizza sauce on the pastry sheets. You don't necessarily need to use all the sauce as the pastry needs to cook well. If you have excess, it makes a great pasta sauce!
  3. Spread the vegan cheese evenly across the pastry sheets.
  4. Roll each puff pastry sheet along the long end of the pastry to make a thicker pastry roll (rather than a longer one). Make sure not to roll too tightly.
  5. Cut the big pastry roll into roughly 12 x 2cm thick slices.
  6. Arrange the pizza rolls evenly on baking sheets, spiral facing up.
  7. Brush the top of the pizza rolls with the plant based milk, if using.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
